The Raigad Military School has during the short span of fifteen years become synonymous with VISION, DEDICATION, EXCELLENCE AND COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL VALUES. Raigad Military School will no doubt be a legacy for the new generations.
The school was started by some of the noted Freedom Fighters of Raigad District. In a meeting of the Freedom Fighters and ex-servicemen of Raigad District under the leadership of the late Shri Nanasaheb Purohit the idea to have a military school in the region was originated. The Raigad Military School was started on 12th August 1990 in the distinguished presence of Shri Sharadraoji Pawar, the erstwhile Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra, Shri Madhu Dandavate, the erstwhile Finance Minister of Government of India, the late Shri Nanasaheb Kunte, Shri Manohar Joshi and several other notable and distinguished personalities.
The Government of Maharashtra allotted a hilly track of land at Achloli in Taluka Mahad in Raigad District. With that commenced the saga of achievements. The Engineering Corps of Indian Army were gracious in extending their invaluable help and assistance in developing this inhospitable terrain by leveling the land and laying roads. The Army continues to help us even today in whatever area it can. But equally important was the problem of raising other resources particularly the finance since the school was not to get any assured financial help from either the State and/or Central Government. It is in this area of raising financial resources, the efforts made singularly by Shri Prabhakar Kunte, the Chairman of our Trust are unparallel. One shudders to think that in his absence, the entire concept would have remained a pipe dream. The school succeeded in getting donations from every source possible which includes donors like the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust, the Industrialist, Shri B.G.Shirke, the Businessmen, Shri Raj Basantani and Shri Nadeem Dadarkar, the Chief Minister’s Fund and several others, big as well as small. Whenever required, he also took the assistance of bank loans at the most reasonable rate of interest and ensured that the same were repaid in time and in most cases, even before time.
All these activities have in a short span of years resulted into the school having facilities at par with any Public School at an affordable cost. The school is equipped with the state-of-art features viz. spacious ventilated airy class rooms, well equipped library, laboratories, and computer centre. The school has all the amenities like large playgrounds suiting all types of games, gymnasium, hobby work centers, mini Olympic size swimming pool and horse riding facilities. The students both boys and girls are also provided with separate hostel facilities and clean, wholesome and healthy food. The school has been providing value based education. The school lays special emphasis on overall personality development of each student while simultaneously imparting quality academic inputs. All this will ensure instilling value based education, discipline and well developed personality which will stand in good stead in all the walks of life of our students. Over a period of time the strength of the students kept on increasing and today we have on the roll 650 students out of which 95 are girl students. The school is run on lines of other military schools in our country, but at a very affordable annual fee of Rs.38,000/- which includes hostel and other charges. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and imparts education up to Junior Science College level. So far fourteen students of our school, have joined armed forces in Officers’ ranks – through National Defence Academy, Indian Military Academy Officers’ Training Academy and Air Force Academy. The school at Achloli has practically reached its intake capacity and any further addition in capacity, it is felt, may not be in the best interest of the school at this juncture and hence the efforts hereafter will be to consolidate and to stabilise.
Success is a supreme motivator and therefore nothing succeeds like success. In order to give financial stability to our Achloli school, and for providing further higher educational avenues to our students, it was felt that we should establish a Defence Oriented Engineering College preferably in Mumbai. After a great deal of efforts, the Government of Maharashtra, through Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority had agreed to grant us initially a plot of land admeasuring 6700 sq.metres and subsequently an additional plot of land of 4000 sq.metres. In this regard the grateful assistance of the Sarvashri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde, our Chief Ministers and Shri Madhu Chavan, the erstwhile Chairman of MHADA deserves special mention and our thanks.
